December 28, 1970: A red letter Day in the history of Games and Sports in Assam, when the Assam Olympic Association come into being, heralding a new dimension in the organization and control of Games and Sports in this premier North East State.
Till the seventies of the last century, Sports in Assam was managed and governed by the respective State bodies without an umbrella organization like a State Olympic Association. After about a quarter of a century with organized Games and Sports being nurtured in the state,a few leading Sports organizers took the historic step of forming a State Olympic Body in Assam with the Assam Amateur Athletic Association taking a leading role in the Endeavour and called a representative meeting of all the State and District level Sports Association and eminent sports personalities of the State .The venue was the indoor Stadium in Dibrugarh.The date was December , 28,1970.
It was in this historic conclave that the Assam Olympic Association came into being as the umbrella organization of Sports bodies in the State of Assam. With the formation of the Assam Olympic Association (A.O.A), all the State level sports bodies recognized by various National Federation /Association, got themselves affiliated to the Assam Olympic Association .Subsequently, the District Level Sports Association affiliated to respective State bodies, were also accorded affiliated by the Assam Olympic Association .

With the passage if time ,Assam Olympic Association has been organizing the State Games and is proud enough to recall that the 33rd National Games were very successfully staged in Guwahati and Morigaon in February ,2007 last.
Assam Olympic Association have at the moment 38 State Level and 25 District Sports Association as affiliated unites who control respective games and Sports in the state and district level respectively.
